In-Car Devices

Shown on the left is a portable device for satellite navigation. Portable Sat Nav devices can be good choices if you find yourself having to hire cars at home or abroad or when you have to transfer from one car to another and carry the device from car to car. In terms of pinpoint accuracy, ease of use and display clarity (especially on road junctions), they cannot match the dedicated In-Car Navigation devices.

The short introduction to Satellite Navigation systems discussed that these devices make use of the Global Positioning System to calculate the position of your vehicle with a good degree of accuracy. As long as the car navigation receiver can read the position of at least three satellites, then by a process of mathematical triangulation it can work out the location of where you are. GPS is the core technology of nearly all these devices but newly-added features improve both the accuracy and usability of navigational aids. These various features differentiate the various types of Sat Nav devices on the market. Gyroscopes and “speed pulse feeds” further enhance the accuracy of these systems. These devices can also be “embedded” into a car’s electronics systems.
